Blake Brantley - Athletic victories vs Academic Performance
When looking at high school boy and girl athletes, their records in terms of winning and losing, and their academic performance, those athletes with winning records, on average, performed better academically compared to those with losing records. Although there is a correlation between the two, it is not enough to say that having a winning record will cause one to have better academics. The athletes with winning records probably have higher grades because they put more effort into what they do, whether it be their athletics or academics. If these students are working so hard that they are winning lots of their games, they probably are putting that same effort into their school work. A second reason could be how much they care about how well they do compared to other students. Those students with winning records probably care more about their performance compared to others and that is why they try so hard and continue to win. One last reason that this correlation exists is because athletes with a winning record have a psychological advantage compared to the athletes with losing records. While an athlete with a losing record might think that others are more talented or naturally gifted than them and that there is no point in trying to overtake them, athletes with winning records have seen themselves thrive and have the confidence to continue winning in the academic world as well as in their athletics.
