Blake Brantley - Connection between Liminal Places and Hospitality

"The distinction between tourist and pilgrim identity has been shown in that tourists remain their own center of power through their command within a marketplace economy. Whereas, pilgrims move toward a center of power beyond themselves and receive gifts of unconditional hospitality along their journey." At the end of their journeys, tourists tend to leave with pictures, memories and maybe a couple souvenirs, while pilgrims remain on the land after receiving gifts alongside the memories. Pilgrims have much better rewards at the end because of their means of obtaining it, trusting the world around them instead of just themselves. Although this exact scenario with pilgrims and tourists would not work in today's society, there are numerous examples of this idea being played out. The idea to step out of one's comfort zone and trust the process. By moving towards power beyond oneself, more opportunities will present themselves and rewards will be received. For example, a recent graduate who looks for power beyond themselves (other businessmen or employers) will have a better time finding a job and getting paid than one who looks for power within themselves.
