Blake Brantley - Meaning of Myth (Rollo May)
Symbolic action bridges the gap “between outer existence (the world) and inner meaning; and it arose out of man’s capacity to separate inner meaning and outer existence” (22). Stories, novels, television shows, movies, and all forms of art are used to bring out inner thoughts or feelings onto the outside world. Without symbolic action, would the world continue to evolve? Is there another connector other than symbolism that would allow humanity to bridge the gap between the world and inner meaning? Would anything have meaning without symbolization? People enjoy reading books and watching movies because they are able to connect either with the story or with the characters. Without symbolism, these connections wouldn't exist and people would have no reason to watch these pointless shows.
