Blake Brantley - Responsibilities as Parent vs Citizen
If your son or daughter were to commit a crime, is your responsibility as a citizen to report them to the authorities or your responsibility as a parent to protect them and punish them individually? Since the answer might depend on the child's age and what the crime was, lets say that the child is a pre-teen and has been involved in an assault and robbery. In this scenario, the robbery was unsuccessful and the assault did not cause any permanent damages. Although the child may not be punished harshly by the law, I still would not leave it up to chances and would not report it to the authorities, just in case of the off chance that the child is given a harsh sentencing/punishment. I understand why some would want to turn in the child, whether it be for protecting themselves or serving the state, but I believe that the responsibilities one has as a parent outweighs all other obligations. At the very least, I believe that it should not be an easy decision either way, both the responsibilities of us as citizens and parents are strong.
