Briar Bond, Journal Entry 13 - The Hero's Journey vs. Modern Travel
An idea occurred to me in class the other day. The Hero's Journey so often focuses on the actual journey from point A to point B, and the development the traveler undergoes along that journey. This is seen particularly well in our class discussions on pilgrimage and long distance travel, where the one on the journey has ample time for introspection.
So I was wondering, does the ease of modern travel shoot the Hero's Journey in the foot, so to speak? Now, if you have enough money, you can get to anywhere in the world within no more than a couple of days. Long distance, arduous journeys are something you only embark on if you want to. However, that means that most people will never experience the Hero's Journey in a classical sense, especially because there would inherently be no sense of urgency in a long journey. The modern way of traveling does not seem conducive to the concept in the slightest, so I wonder what might a modern Hero's Journey even look like?
