Briar Bond, Journal Entry 14 - Roots of Traditions
Do you guys remember way back in the first or second class when we were discussing the religious roots of some common traditions? Specifically we were discussing the origins of western theater, how it started as a religious ritual for the greek gods, particularly Dionysus.
I have been wondering since then just how much of our day to day experiences can be drawn back to ancient practices, but the true meanings have been lost to time.
I have thought about this concept a bit before because a few of my immediate family follow Celtic pagan traditions and practices. I have traced back holiday traditions to such origins, like Christmas to Yule or Easter to Ostara. There are also some common practices that I know have religious origins, like saying bless you when someone sneezes. It makes me wonder just how many of our regular day to day activities are remnants of past traditions, how they have evolved from their original meanings.
