Briar Bond, Journal Entry #7, Techne

We touched on an idea in class today that I feel like is the heart of this entire course, techne. This is the idea of human creation, the one thing that truly sets us apart from other animals. This is art, science, engineering, communication, everything we associate with human culture. We have spoken a lot on the class about how religious and spiritual ideas tie into society and the idea of self. We've discussed the evolution and influence of various traditions.

My question is, can all of this be folded under the umbrella of techne? Some may argue no, that religion and spirituality are bigger than us. But I would argue that religion is just another facet of human creations, and all of the traditions and practices affiliated with it even more so.

The more I think about it, the more expansive this word can be. If examined carefully, it seems to encompass everything we know about culture, and therefore encompasses everything that we are as a species.
