Briar Bond, Journal Entry 8 - Figures in External vs Internal Journeys

The Hero's Journey focuses heavily on the obstacles a hero faces and the helping hands they might receive along the way. This translates most easily to external journeys (ex. The Odyssey) in which the hero is physically moving from place to place and is having physical encounters with these various figures.

My term paper has focused heavily on internal journeys, so I've had this question develop. What do these figures look like when the journey happens almost entirely within the hero's head? Can there still be supernatural aid? If so, is it as simple as anyone outside of the hero's own mind is supernatural aid, or does it have to be a wise mentor archetype character?

I find drawing similarities and differences between the structures of different journeys very interesting, so this is something I will probably give more thought to in the future and as I write my paper for this course.
