Dreaming of Cairo, what we leave behind #5
Recently we read and dissected the poem In Baghdad, Dreaming of Cairo; Dreaming of Baghdad. It follows the journey of a man on his way to Cairo in search of the treasure that was promised to him in a dream. But he then discovers that the treasure he went on this harrowing journey for was in the end buried under his home back in Baghdad. It is a very interesting story that tells the importance of knowing what you have and realizing how lucky you are to have it. You can go out in search of something only to realize that you had what you were looking for the whole time right in front of you, you were just unable to realize that until it was taken away from you. It makes me wonder how much I could have left behind every time that I have left home. What could have awaited me if I was patient enough to see it, greet it, and wait for it. How much have I missed because I have been too expectant to find it out in the world, in new places, and in new people. I want to be able to see and do everything and I am taking the time that I have with the people that I already know for granted. In going to boarding school and furthering my education at 13, how much time did I lose with my parents, my siblings, will that be the time I am ever awarded back even though I am now on the other side of the country from them?
