Emerson Worst - The Friend You Need

Emerson Worst - The Friend You Need

April 26th 2026

As I was thinking back on this year, and remembering all the crazy stories we've read and heard, I remembered something specific that Dr. Redick told us. I might be hazy on the details, but I remember the important parts clearly. I believe it was when he and his friend resolved to make a change, going away from some bad habits of theirs. The moment that I'm remembering specifically is when Redick is at a party, and his friend pulled him aside to tell him that they were blowing it. They were not adhering to the promise they made to themselves, and they were just falling back into their bad habits. (or something like that).
I think about this because it reminds me of how many things I try to change about myself, like fixing some issues with procrastination and whatnot, and how often I fail to commit to those changes. It's easy to make those promises in your mind, but when you're making those promises to yourself, it's much easier to break them.
That's why this story from our time in class has stuck with me for so long. In this story, a friend is looking out for not only himself, but his friend, and is working to better himself. And after he tells his realization to his friend, they both work together to continue to better each other. Because they made a promise to someone very special to them, they don't want to break that promise because it would mean letting their friend down. That's what it takes to truly change. Not just one person, but someone trying to change with you, and someone you want to change for.
