Isaiah Langford - St. Thérèse as Hero and Mystic - 4/14/2026

In The Story of a Soul, St. Thérèse of Lisieux in some way depicts her entire life as a journey toward the ultimate end of most religion, namely, union with God. It begins with her youth and ardent desire to join the Carmelite convent (to the point of an audience with Pope Leo XIII) and ends with words from her sisters that describe her final days and final words as she passed from this life to the next at the age of twenty-four. Throughout the work, she describes her fervent intent to be little, as a child, and it is from this desire that her “little way” has been extracted; her only reason in writing these reflections on her life was because her Superiors asked it of her, and thus she was simply intent on obedience, not looking for fame or glory from her writing, although it is exceedingly inspiring prose that often shines like the poetic rather than the prosaic. Her entire life can be seen through the lens of both the hero and the mystic, as she underwent an arduous journey set on reaching the goal of the convent (and indeed even had the courage to make a visit with the Holy Father) before reaching the point of serenity and delight behind the grille for which she was so often treasured for; in making the physical journey, she also made a spiritual one which brought her to rest eventually in the sleep of peace. In the capacity of a mystic, she had relatively few visions, most notably one of the Virgin Mary which restored her health after a period of immense sickness, but her prolific writings demonstrate the depths of her spiritual development and how well-nourished she was by her family and cloister. Just to read The Story of a Soul is to gain profound insight into the apotheosis to which little Thérèse attained by drawing ever closer to her Spouse in Christ. As an impactful and arguably successful mystic, in that people look to her insights as pertinent to their spiritual journeys, she was able to leave a well-spring of wisdom from which those who thirst for spiritual nourishment may gain their fill.
