Pierce Arnold - Is Paris Texas a Tragedy? 4/26/2026
Is Paris Texas a tragedy or a comedy? When I ask this question I do not mean it in the modern sense of a comedy, that being a funny or lighthearted movie filled with jokes and quips, but rather the traditional definition which considers tragedies to be stories with negative endings and comedies to be stories with positive endings. So again, which category does Paris Texas fall into? On one hand I see the argument for it being a tragedy, after all the film ends with a child’s father whom he has only known for a few days practically abandoning him with his prostitute mother whom he has never met after taking him out of the stable home he had lived in for years. That said, on the other hand the story follows a couple’s journey of making progress towards a reconciliation and a child finally meeting his parents and getting to live with his mother again. In a situation where the two adults in this story are anything other than the boy’s biological parents it is absolutely a tragedy for the child, however given that this is not the case there is more to consider. For the adults in the story I believe the ending is comedic, as they are making progress in healing past wounds, but for the child the issue is absolutely more complex. Unfortunately I don’t really have an answer, because I don’t know if being reunited with his mother and having some time with his father is worth the lifestyle uproot and downgrade that the child experiences. I am inclined to think it's a comedy simply because the value of family is higher than much else, however before the events of the film the boy had an adopted family and more stability than he does at the end.
