Time as a Spiral and Paris, Texas Elise Gunteski #3
The ending of Paris, Texas reminded me of our conversation on time as a spiral. History "repeats" itself, but it is never perfectly the same. There are events or anniversaries of events that echo into the future. One piece of the great trauma in Paris, Texas was the separation of the family. While staying together was definitely not a viable option at the time, the trauma still reverberated throughout the group. The mom left her child with the uncle's family and joined a brothel. Travis wandering in a physical and spiritual desert. Travis' insecurity and jealousy drove the family apart. They had to leave him. He had abandoned them in more ways than one. However, on the next spiral his leaving was the only way to bring healing. Last spiral, they were torn apart. This spiral he set events in motion to reunite his wife with his son. Some people may say that he should have stayed, but I disagree. His journey continues. They are beginning to find healing, but he must continue on. Maybe on the next spiral he will find the peace and healing to join the rest of his family. Maybe each turn of the wheel will bring them closer and closer. He and his wife will never have the relationship they had when they first met, but perhaps they can live in parallel. Or perhaps the spiral will carry him out of their lives, allowing the wife and child to journey together. Travis caused deep trauma and maybe it's best if the spiral carries him on alone.
