Virginia Press - Journal Entry 12 - Conditioning
I have never been much for conditioning. I played soccer, but I was never blessed with stamina. In fact, I'm rather sore right now from nothing much in particular. My body is simply not in very good shape.
However, I did think of one physical experience which related me to the pain of conditioning; Breaking in new heels.
They are a physically trying thing. Blisters litter your feet for ages, and your calves and thighs will scream and burn for days following your first go about. They make it difficult to function and you will be frequently tempted to throw them off and throw them out! However, callouses form. Muscle memory will begin to ease the strain of walking and soon you're strutting in taller and taller shoes. From the pain and struggle grows resilience and skill. Your wearing of cute shoes is the beautiful thing which comes at the end of repeated pain inflicted by the path you walk on and the shoes you walk it in.
Women know this. "Beauty is pain" is a common idiom that brings together girls who share in this ecstatic experience. The confidence of a woman elevated in presence who knows how to walk her heels is unmatched. That is the pride of someone who knows to relish in the pain of becoming who you want to be.
Anyway. St. Teresa the girl boss I suppose.
