Emerson Worst Rumi Reading

April 9th, 2026

I decided to look back on the Rumi poem we read. I've been needing inspiration for my artifact essay, and this one was cited as a good example. I read through the poem again, looking for how the journey is told throughout the story. Overall, this journey is one about self-discovery, and about loving what you have. Throughout the poem, the man is looking for Cairo, and a great treasure that he must find. However when he arrives, he is shocked to realize that the house he's looking for is his own. Now, what I believe leads up to this, is his arrival in Cairo, when he's forced to beg, and when he's pulled aside by the guards. There are many more events, but this is the turning point for his journey. He arrives to Cairo, exhausted, worn out, most likely very smelly, and with barely anything at all. Now, he's come all this way to find a treasure, so he explains himself to the guards, but only after he says it out loud, does he realize what he's looking for. I believe this is an important step of his journey, because in the end, we have more than we think, and sometimes we can't even see what's right in front of us. I feel like it's always important to take some time, think out loud, and realize what it is you truly want in life. And this poem supports that belief of mine.
