The Meaning of Myth - #6
Now the final in-class text that I wanted to reflect on was the Meaning of Myth text that we covered early on in the year with featured Rollo May and his "Significance of Symbols". I wanted to reflect on this just because I had a lot of thoughts concerning symbols and I feel like I see symbols everywhere in my life, regardless of whether they are or not. I am a strong believer in seeing things at the right time, and I feel as though a large part of that comes from when I am walking or watching youtube or eating something and then something appears which remains me of the past, I feel like that was destined to happen. I don't know exactly why I feel this way about a lot of these things, but I don't ever think that it ever was taught to me but something that I just thought of on my own or discovered on my own. I feel like these moments are symbols of their own that are being shown to me, for example, if I just spent time with my mother and she taught me a recipe for a dish and then I go on instagram and immediately get a reel about that dish, I find myself considering that to be symbolism. The symbolism is this sense is because I have given that thing meaning, if my mother had never shown me that recipe, I wouldn't have stopped and thought about the recipe and given it the time of day that I did end up giving it. As such, I think that something can have symbolism to a general group of people, like the Great Gatsby for example, however, I think that 90% of the symbolism we experience as people and 100% of the most impactful and defining symbolism in our lives comes from the personal meaning that we input into these events that makes it special to us and us alone.
